Abstract

Art, Evolution, and an Integral Understanding of ConsciousnessAccording to Emanuel Swedenborg “the simpler and purer a thing is, the more complex it is and the more it contains.” Awakening into “integral” consciousness (Ken Wilber’s term for what some call “enlightenment”) can seem the simplest of experiences, yet within it is nested a complexity that opens the world’s multifaceted splendor. Our awareness is the fruit of millennia of evolutionary growth and change. Dr. Combs, one of the pioneers of Integral theory, who has worked closely with Ken Wilber, will trace the evolution of human consciousness and its future possibilities in an engaging trip through history as illustrated in works of art and in examples of contemporary integral thought.
